Shea Nilotica ~  Certified Organic and Fair Trade

A wonderful unrefined fair trade shea butter from Northern Uganda!

Shea Nilotica is a premium Certified Organic shea butter produced from the fruit of the Vitellaria Nilotica sub species of the Karite tree which grows across Northern Uganda. Softer in texture with a very mild aroma and a light yellow color, Shea Nilotica is one of the finest shea butters we've ever carried!  Shea Nilotica has a significantly higher content of olein, a glyceride of oleic acid, making it softer and creamier than its West African Shea Butter counterpart.  It is high in unsaponifiables, antioxidants and cinneamic acid, a natural sunscreen. Readily absorbed into the skin and hair, it will delight you with its buttery smoothness!

Our Shea Nilotica has IMO organic certification meeting both USDA and European standards for wild harvesting.  The nuts are sourced from a women's cooperative with 1600 members who are paid fair trade prices 25 - 50% above the rates women earn in the local markets.  The shea butter nuts are cold-pressed without any chemicals, and the butter is filterd and packaged into sterile containers for shipment to us.  We repackage it in our warehouse without further processing.

Shea Nilotica has a lower melt point and a less waxy texture than the more traditional shea butters used more commonly in cosmetic products today. In warmer climates it may be in a semi-liquid state when you receive it.  If this is the case, simply refrigerate it to firm it up. Due to the softer texture of this butter, it is packed in tubs rather than our customary bags.  However, we offer a 5 pound bag option for those who want to ship via Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes, as the 5 pound bucket will not fit in a flat rate box.

If you've shied away from unrefined shea butters due to their strong nutty aroma and less than smooth texture, you owe it to yourself to experience the Shea Nilotica difference.  You won't be disappointed!
