CETAC 30% - Cetrimonium Chloride is a cationic quaternary ammonium salt that is used as a light hair conditioning agent. Its use in conditioners and cream rinses improves both wet and dry combing and reduces static electricity. As it is cationic, it is used primarily in conditioning products rather than in shampoos.
This product is a 29 - 30% active solution of cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride.
It also finds use as a topical antiseptic and a preservative due to its ability to inhibit the growth of microorganisms. It is used as a surfactant (for cleansing and emulsifying) and a suspending agent.
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review determined CETAC is safe to use in leave on products at 0.25% active. The EU has suggested usage rates of 2.5% active in rinse off hair care products, 1.0% active in leave on hair care products, and 0.5% active in leave on facial cream products. This is due to the potential for it to be a skin irritant at higher amounts.
