Optiphen® BSB-N / Rokonsal™ BSB-N (in Europe) - Conforms to ECOCERT Guidelines for use in Certified Organic products

Optiphen BSB-N (sold as/ Rokonsal BSB-N in Europe) is a new "mild preservative" by ISP.  It is a combination of Benzoic and Sorbic acids in Benzyl alcohol.  It is effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, yeasts and molds in formulations with an acid pH value no greater than 5.

The ingredients of Optiphen BSB-N are compliant with ECOCERT guidelines and also conform to the German BDIH and Conseil de l'Europe recommendations for Natural Cosmetic Products.

APPLICATIONS

Optiphen BSB-N is recommended for shampoos, conditioners, shower gels, and foam baths. It can also be used in styling applications including mousses and gels.

It is also useful for creams, emulsions, lotions and gels with acidic pH (no higher then pH 5). It is suitable for both oil/water and water/oil emulsions.

FORMULATION GUIDELINES

It can be added to the aqueous phase at temperatures up to 80°C (167°F).

In aqueous products with low emulsifier content, intensive mixing is recommended to achieve a uniform dispersal of the preservative.

In simple surfactant systems, as little as 0.2% may be needed.

Strong oxidizing agents and strong acids will lead to decomposition of the active ingredients.

While Optiphen BSB-N is classified as a "mild" preservative as formulated, it should be handled with care as the preservative can be harmful if inhaled or swallowed and causes moderate eye irritation.  Read the MSDS before use and follow recommended guidelines for handling.

Recommended use levels: 0.2% - 1%.

Solubility: Water soluble
Storage: Store in a cool dry place out of direct sunlight. Should be stored at a temperature between 8-25°C (46 - 77°F)
